The Challenge

A specialized financial software firm had acquired a BI startup to provide enterprise grade data solutions with unique write back capabilities, allowing users to input data directly back into the database. This was a differentiator in a crowded market.

I joined during the critical post acquisition phase. The product was plagued by legacy spaghetti code and lacked thousands of necessary test cases. Yet we had demanding clients who needed complex new features, specifically Excel like tables and Pivot Matrix solutions, and competitors were actively trying to win them away.

The Tension

Financial teams live by cycles and deadlines. Quarter close. Budget planning. Audit season. These clients needed absolute reliability at the worst possible moment, and our codebase was held together with hope. We couldn't pause features to fix foundations, but we couldn't keep shipping on a shaky base either.

My Role

As Senior Product Owner, I became the guardian of both stability and innovation. This meant understanding the language of financial stakeholders, translating their high stakes requirements into precise technical specifications, and constantly balancing the competing demands of new features versus foundational repair.
